Phlebotomy technicians are part of the medical laboratory team whose primary role is the collection of blood samples from patients using microtechniques or venipuncture. Phlebotomists must implement safe and sanitary techniques to meet industry standards. Duties vary depending on the medical setting, but often include drawing blood from patients, assembling equipment, such as blood collection devices, verifying patient records, entering patient data and labeling and storing blood containers for processing. These professionals draw blood for a wide range of reasons, including disease identification, research, blood donations and blood transfusions. Students interested in becoming a phlebotomist can sign up for a phlebotomy training program at local community colleges, vocational schools or allied healthcare schools. Acceptance into a phlebotomy certification program typically includes a high school diploma or GED, proof of immunizations and a criminal background check. The curriculum can often be completed in less than 10 months and is divided into class lectures, labs and a clinical practicum. Phlebotomy classes cover topics, such as anatomy and physiology, methods for drawing blood, industry standards for safety and professional ethics. Labs are provided with models where students can practice technique and hone their skills. Clinical practicums are generally assigned at hospitals, medical centers, blood labs or physician offices. Phlebotomy certification programs provide students with the necessary skills to attain entry-level positions in the field.

Phlebotomy Schools in Minnesota

There are many phlebotomy schools in major cities in Minnesota like Minneapolis, Alexandria and Duluth. At the Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, students can take phlebotomy classes and receive phlebotomy certification in 12 weeks. The curriculum includes classroom learning and a clinical experience. The phlebotomy certification courses include classes in venipuncture, infection control, medical terminology and anatomy and physiology of the circulatory system. The phlebotomy training program at this medical center is offered in January and September.The Minneapolis Community and Technical College offers a phlebotomy training program that is approved by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Studies.

The phlebotomy classes total up to 16 credits and include didactic instruction in health care safety standard precautions, human biology and medical terminology. Labs and clinical experiences are also provided and required for hands-on learning.At Alexandria Technical College, students can complete the phlebotomy training program in one semester. Phlebotomy classes include clinical phlebotomy, anatomy and physiology, basic lab techniques and phlebotomy skills. The phlebotomy program is comprehensive and provides students with the necessary skill set for entry-level positions as phlebotomists. Upon successful completion of the program, students are eligible to sit for the national examination for phlebotomy.

Job Outlook and Salary for Phlebotomists in Minnesota

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the demand for phlebotomists is expected to grow at a rate of 22 percent through 2020. This grow and demand is above average when compared to other industries. Phlebotomists can expect job opportunities in hospitals, blood testing laboratories, doctors’ offices and medical centers. The BLS also reports that the annual wage for phlebotomists is $29,000.
