Phlebotomy Training in Nevada

Becoming a phlebotomist in the state of Nevada involves gaining the knowledge and skills necessary to perform arterial or venipuncture procedures, along with learning laboratory techniques and safe handling of body fluids. Candidates require certification following completion of appropriate programs through accepted schools. High School graduates desiring a career in phlebotomy must attend a training program accredited and approved by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. Interested candidates find the necessary coursework at a college, university or technical school.

Phlebotomy Training Requirements

Students have the option of taking classes at one of various schools in order to obtain a certificate, a diploma or an Associate’s degree in phlebotomy. In order to meet certification requirements in the state, students must have at least 40 hours of classroom lecture along with 120 hours of clinical experience. Students must also perform 100 unassisted venipunctures during clinical training. A basic certification program requires three to four weeks of attendance. Programs offering graduates a diploma extend for two to six months. Students choosing to obtain Associate’s degrees attend a variety of classes for approximately two years.

Regardless of the level of education that potential phlebotomists obtain, coursework must cover specific topics.

  • Human anatomy explores the paths of the vascular network that exists throughout the body. Students must capably identify and locate the vessels appropriate for puncture.
  • Glove application, needles and puncture techniques entail learning the proper methods for applying and removing gloves prior to performing procedures. Students acquire knowledge concerning the various laboratory tools used to perform punctures. Training also involves lecture and hands-on skills training concerning actual venipunctures.
  • Students also become familiar with the variety of syringes, tourniquets and other laboratory equipment commonly encountered. Future phlebotomists must not only learn how to properly obtain blood specimen, but must also properly contain, label and transport the specimens as needed.
  • State and federal guidelines require that anyone coming in contact with blood or other body fluids follow certain procedural protocols for the safety of the technician, the patient and other medical employees.

After completing educational requirements, graduates may apply for state certification. Certification requires taking a written test that covers all aspects of phlebotomy. Following certification, phlebotomists must renew the credential annually, in addition to attending continuing education classes pertaining to the field.

Outlook for Phlebotomists in Nevada

Once completing the necessary education requirements and obtaining state certification, the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates that employment options for phlebotomists, along with other healthcare professions, will continue rising through the year 2020. Graduates might find employment in private or public hospitals, medical clinics or medical laboratories. Blood banks, plasma centers and other facilities requiring blood samples are also possibilities.

Entry level wages vary depending on the type of facility where one gains employment and the location of that institution. Larger cities typically offer higher wages. On average, the median starting wage for phlebotomists in Nevada is around $26,000.
