Phlebotomy Training in NY

In order to receive phlebotomy certification in New York, a person needs to complete a course of training duly certified by the state. Before a person desiring phlebotomy certification can commence such a program, he or she must have a high school diploma or a GED. No other prior experience or education is required to undertake a phlebotomy training program in the state.

Phlebotomy training in New York is available through a number of different organizations and institutions. Examples of these include schools within the CUNY system and private institutions of higher education. In the American Red Cross offers a preliminary training program sufficient to permit a person the ability to obtain appropriate certification to enter into the field of phlebotomy.

Phlebotomy Licensing Versus Certification in New York

Although the state of New York must approve a particular school's or organization's phlebotomy training curriculum, the state itself does not license phlebotomists. Rather, a phlebotomist is certified upon completing of an approved course of study offered in the state of New York.

Job Duties of a Phlebotomist

Despite not directly licensing phlebotomists working in the state of New York, the state government does specifically delineate the work that a phlebotomist can undertake. Specifically, a phlebotomist working in New York, after obtaining an appropriate certification to do so, is legally permitted to draw blood and collect urine samples from individuals. These samples are collected for further testing.

A New York phlebotomist cannot perform any tests on any collected samples. After drawing a sample, he or she ensures the container containing a sample is both properly sealed and labeled. Following that process, a phlebotomist submits a sample for transmission to a laboratory.

A phlebotomist can provide basic information about the purpose for a particular blood draw. However, a phlebotomist is not permitted to provide any information about test results or any similar type of information to a patient or other individual who submits to a blood draw (or the collection of a urine sample).

Course of Study for Phlebotomy Certification in New York

Although different programs may vary their curriculum slightly, some general areas of study are a part of any phlebotomy training program in New York. At the heart of any training program is instruction and hand-on experience in preparing an individual for venipuncture (or the drawing of blood for a person's vein). This includes the physical assessment of the individual, palpitation of veins and the actual act of venipuncture and the withdrawal of blood.

Once the fundamentals are learned by a person in a phlebotomy training program in New York, a portion of the training experience involves actual hands-on work with patients. This typically is done in a clinical setting through an externship type of program.

The course of study for phlebotomy certification in New York does not require a long term commitment on the part of a person in training. Some basic courses can be completed in a matter of weeks, while more extensive training programs can take several months.

Phlebotomy Training in Massachusetts

The phlebotomist's work consists of drawing blood from patients in order to test it, as well as for donations; in a hospital setting, a phlebotomist may perform transfusions as a part of their duties. Phlebotomists do not analyze the blood they draw nor do they administer injections. Since they may be called upon to explain the blood-drawing procedure to their patients, the job requires a phlebotomist to possess good interpersonal skills. Phlebotomists should be prepared to work in stressful, high-pressure conditions. They may work in various types of medical facilities including hospitals, doctors’ offices or in independent laboratories. Their patients can range in age from infants to senior citizens.

Working as a Phlebotomist in Massachussetts

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are 2,800 phlebotomists working in the state of Massachusetts and the median average wage for this job is $36,000. While there is presently no law that requires phlebotomy certification in Massachusetts, it is still a good idea for an individual to get properly trained and certified. A bill requiring such licensing has been introduced and should licensure become a requirement, certification will be an important factor in the phlebotomist's ability to find work.

What Phlebotomists Do

The most common method of drawing blood is called "venipuncture." Venipuncture involves using a needle to find the patient's vein in order to collect blood. This is one of the main skills of the phlebotomist.

• Correctly identify a patient before drawing blood
• Draw the correct amount of blood using venipuncture and other techniques
• Correctly label the specimens they collect
• Effectively communicate with patients as well as with their coworkers
• Use a computer to keep phlebotomy-related records
• Adhere to OSHA regulations

Phlebotomists must be able to understand medical terminology such as instructions from a doctor on how much blood to draw and the type of vial they must use. Most phlebotomy courses will offer students the option of taking a national examination to become certified. Some phlebotomy programs include training on how to use an EKG machine.

Phlebotomy Training in Massachusetts

A phlebotomy training course will include both classroom and clinical sessions. The clinical part of the course will include training on how to draw blood using mannequins, fellow students or actual patients. There are many training programs open to those who wish to become phlebotomists. Prerequisites for a Massachusetts phlebotomy course are typically:

• That they be at least 18 years old
• A diploma from a high school or a GED
• A clean background record
• Good English speaking skills
• The ability to write at an 8th grade level
• The ability to pass a health exam
• An understanding of basic computer applications

A typical phlebotomy training course will consist of topics such as:

• Anatomy related to the body's circulatory system
• Patient safety and confidentiality regarding patient information
• Safety procedures related to blood borne pathogens
• Venipuncture and the complications that may arise from the procedure
• Control of infection
• Interaction with patients
• How to process specimens

In addition to providing valuable training for phlebotomists, a phlebotomy training course is helpful for those who are already in other medical professions; for example, phlebotomy is a requirement for nurses and nursing aides.

Phlebotomy Training in Connecticut

Have you ever wished you had the ability to save someone’s life or really make a difference in the world? I’m sure many of us have. Becoming a phlebotomy technician (phlebotomist) can be the first step towards reaching your career goals. Learn how easy it is to complete phlebotomy training in Connecticut and be part of a rewarding career.

What Will I Do as a Phlebotomy Technician?

A phlebotomy technician (phlebotomist) is a medical professional who draws blood from patience for the purpose of testing, and diagnosing and treating sickness or diseases. They may also handle urine samples as well. In addition to drawing blood, they perform other duties, including taking vital signs, taking and documenting medical histories, talking to and calming patients, sterilizing equipment, preparing blood samples for the lab and disposing of contaminated supplies. Phlebotomy technicians may find work opportunities in various medical settings such as hospitals, clinics, medical laboratories and physicians’ offices.

What Is Phlebotomy Training in Connecticut Like?

If you’re interested in completing phlebotomy training in Connecticut, you’ll have several schools from which to choose. Phlebotomy training is usually a short-term program (less than a year) that results in a certificate or diploma. The curriculum includes coursework, lectures and hands-on training. Course topics may include medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, human communication, phlebotomy techniques, universal precautions and infection control, specimen handling and collection procedures, among others. For practical experience, you’ll be required to complete an internship at a medical facility to receive supervised, hands-on training.

One Connecticut college, in particular, requires phlebotomy students to complete at least 100 hours and do at least 100 unassisted blood draws. While hands-on training is required in all phlebotomy training in Connecticut, the number of hours and procedures required may vary from school to school. Prior to starting the phlebotomy training, students are required to meet certain admission requirements such as proof of health screenings, immunizations, criminal background checks and CPR certification. These may also vary by school.

How Do I Obtain Phlebotomy Certification in Connecticut?

The State of Connecticut Department of Public Health does not require that phlebotomy certification in Connecticut. However, they do acknowledge that employers prefer to have the phlebotomy technicians certified. Aspiring phlebotomy technicians can obtain phlebotomy certification in Connecticut from several different organizations. The American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians (ASPT) offers a certification exam to candidates who have completed an accredited training program or have at least one year of part-time or six months of full-time work in the field.

The American Medical Technologists (AMT) offers phlebotomy certification in Connecticut to any individual who has completed an AMT-approved phlebotomy program or completed at least 1,040 hours work experience in this field. Two other organizations offering phlebotomy certification exams are the National Healthcare Association and the National Center for Competency Testing. They also both require that candidates complete training programs or show proof of sufficient work experience.

What is the Career Outlook for Phlebotomy Technicians in Connecticut

The U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, who categorized these professionals as medical and clinical laboratory technologists and technicians, reported that these professionals could see an employment growth of about 13% between 2010 and 2020. The better opportunities should come to the technicians who are certified. There were approximately 1,280 medical and clinical laboratory technologists and technicians employed in Connecticut as of May 2012, and they earned a mean annual wage of $49,580 This figure is substantially higher than the nationwide earnings of $39,340.
